Responsive web design (RWD) is an approach that is aimed at creating a fantastic user experience no matter what device you are using, whether you are using a mobile phone, tablet, desktop or laptop if a site is responsive you should be able to navigate and view the content just as easily. Responsive design adapts the content to fit within the viewing landscape of whichever device you are using. As well as user experience it is key to make your website as fast as possible for mobile devices as users are often using them on the go and have to rely on 3G or 4G networks to load website. These mobile networks are often slower to load than when the mobile devices are connected to Wi-Fi networks.
Mobile growth or should I say so-called smart phones has exploded over the last few years. The growth of mobile Internet usage is now surpassing that of normal laptop / desktop usage. Google has also adapted their algorithm to index mobile friendly sites higher than there non-mobile friendly counterparts. In a nutshell if your website is not responsive or mobile friendly it will not appear as high up on Google searches.
People using mobile phones to access the internet has more than doubled between 2010 to 2014: 24% to 58%
68% of adults used the internet ‘on the go’
58% used a mobile phone to access the internet
43% used a laptop or tablet to access the internet
15% used an ebook reader or other handheld device to access the internet
